The Sydney Scholars India Equity Scholarship is a scholarship program offered by the University of Sydney to support outstanding Indian students from low socio-economic backgrounds pursuing postgraduate coursework. Know the Eligibility
1. Applicants must be international students who are not Australian citizens or permanent residents.
2. Applicants must be Indian citizens and current residents of slum communities in Delhi where ASHA works.
3. Applicants must apply for a postgraduate coursework degree at the University of Sydney before being considered for the award.
4. Applicants currently enrolled in a postgraduate program at the University of Sydney are ineligible to apply.
5. ASHA recommends preferred candidates who meet all requirements.
Ongoing Eligibility
- To continue receiving the scholarship, the recipient must maintain a GPA of 65 and have no outstanding fees.
- The recipient must remain enrolled full-time. The Scholarships Office must approve part-time scholarships, and the living allowance will be paid at 50% of the full-time rate.
- Recipients who undertake an exchange during the scholarship period must have achieved a grade of “Satisfied Requirements” (SR) to receive their subsequent payment.
- The scholarship can be transferred to another significant degree or faculty at the University of Sydney but not to another university.
Other Requirements
As a scholarship recipient, you may be asked to help promote the scholarship and the program you’re enrolled in. As a representative of the University of Sydney, you may be asked to attend student, marketing, and corporate networking events. The University of Sydney will cover the costs of representing the University at these functions.
What is the Selection Criteria?
1. It will be awarded based on academic performance, financial need, and a personal statement submitted with the application for a postgraduate coursework degree.
2. ASHA will collaborate with the University of Sydney to identify and recommend potential candidates to the Vice-Principal of External Engagement for consideration.
3. It will be awarded based on the nomination of the Vice-Principal of External Engagement.
4. Once a decision has been made, it is considered final and cannot be challenged or appealed.
Value
1. The scholarship will cover the full tuition fee of the postgraduate course, an annual living allowance of $12,000, textbooks and a yearly return flight to India, overseas health cover, student amenity fees, and on-campus accommodation for the duration of the program.
2. Applicants must accept their unconditional offer of admission by the deadline specified in their scholarship offer letter. Failure to do so will result in the scholarship offer being withdrawn.
3. The student must stay enrolled at the University of Sydney beyond the census date.
4. To receive their living allowance, students must have an Australian bank account and wait until after the census date of each semester. The first payment instalment will be made within 7 business days of the student’s arrival in Sydney. To ensure prompt payment processing, students should contact the Scholarships Office.
5. To support students, we offer a reimbursement of up to $3000 for textbooks and one annual return flight to India. This reimbursement is available upon presentation of receipts, and payments are made twice a year, in April and September. Students must submit a claim form and attach relevant receipts to claim a refund.
6. Deferral or suspension of the scholarship is not possible.
7. The scholarship is subject to the availability of funds.
8. No other amount is payable.
9. All amounts are quoted in Australian Dollars.
10. The selected scholar agrees with ASHA to return to India after graduation.
Termination
1. If the recipient fails to meet the scholarship requirements, their scholarship will be terminated:
- Withdraws from their program or fails to enrol.
- Becomes a domestic student.
- Commences part-time study without prior approval.
- Does not maintain a satisfactory academic performance.
- Is found by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, such as providing false or misleading information in their scholarship application.
- Does not resume study at the end of approved leave.
- Violates any other provision of the scholarship terms and conditions.
2. If a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or withdraws from their program, the University reserves the right to request that they reimburse any scholarship funds already paid.
